Oscars 2017 Presenter Falsely Announces Best Pic Winner

In a surprising end to the Oscars telecast, the wrong film was initially announced as the Best Picture winner.

At the 89th annual Academy Awards, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway incorrectly announced La La Land as the night’s Best Picture winner. The film’s cast and crew gave an acceptance speech but stopped midway through to reveal that Moonlight, and not the Damien Chazelle-directed musical had won Best Picture.

La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz announced Moonlight’s win and handed off the Oscar to director Barry Jenkins and the rest of the Moonlight cast and crew.

Beatty took a moment in between the two speeches to say he and Dunaway were given a card that had Emma Stone’s name, as well as La La Land’s title on it. In their confusion, they announced that film as the winner. As spotted by Reddit and Neil Patrick Harris, the card in Beatty’s hand clearly reads “Actress in a Leading Role,” though backstage Emma Stone told reporters she was holding the card with her name announcing her as the Best Actress winner the entire time.

Here’s What Everyone Involved in the Oscars’ Envelopegate Is Saying Happened

The mystery behind the Academy Awards’ Envelopegate — in which La La Land was incorrectly announced as the Best Picture winner, over Moonlight — is still yet to be solved, but many people played a part in what went down.

So far it appears the mix-up was the result of the incorrect card being given to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. As we sift through the evidence, here’s what the people who were there are saying about the most memorable Oscar moment of the year.

Warren Beatty

“I want to tell you what happened,” Beatty said as he retook the stage after presenting the Best Picture Oscar … and after everyone realized what had transpired.

“I opened the envelope and it said ‘Emma Stone, La La Land,’ ” Beatty explained. “That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny.”

Beatty was overheard at an after-party telling someone, “It was nice La La Land got to give speeches and then Moonlight did.”

Emma Stone

“I f—— love Moonlight. I’m so excited for Moonlight,” Stone told reporters backstage after the show. “It was an amazing thing to hear La La Land. We all would have loved to won Best Picture.”

“I also was holding my Best Actress in a Leading Role card the whole time. I’m not sure what happened, but I really wanted to talk to you guys first,” Stone said adding, “I think everyone’s in a state of confusion still. Excitement but confusion. I think everyone is just so excited for Moonlight. It’s such an incredible film.”

Naomie Harris

“It is really surreal. I went up on stage with this weird expression on my face like, ‘What is happening?’ ” Harris said at the Governor’s Ball. “I don’t know what I’m going to look like on screen, I started shaking. I thought, Is this a prank or something?”

She continued, “It’s a shame it happened like that in a way, because it was such a beautiful moment. What is important is that we won and it’s a huge honor and we are totally and utterly thrilled. And we are going to celebrate big time tonight.”

Barry Jenkins

“I think all the movies that were nominated were worthy, so I accepted the results, I applauded like everyone else,” Jenkins, Moonlight‘s writer and director, said in the press room after the show.

“I noticed the commotion that was happening, and I thought something strange had occurred. I’m sure everybody saw my face, but I was speechless with the result. I had always watched the Academy Awards, and I had never seen that happen before. It made a very special feeling even more special, but not in a way I expected.

Jenkins added, “I will say, I saw two cards, and so things just happen. I wanted to see the card, and Warren refused to show the card to anybody before he showed it to me. And so he did. He came upstairs and he walked over to me, and he showed the card. Everyone was asking, ‘Can I see the card?’ And he was like, ‘No, Barry Jenkins has to see the card, I need him to know.’ And I felt better about what had happened.”

“I will say, the folks from La La Land were so gracious,” Jenkins said. “I can’t imagine being in their position and having to do that. We spent a lot of time together over the last six months, and I can’t imagine being in their position. It’s why I was speechless — I wasn’t speechless because I won, I was so speechless that they had to do that.”

Mahershala Ali

In the press room after the show, the Oscar winner explained how things went down for him. “When their name was read, I wasn’t surprised, I was really happy for them.” Ali said. “It’s a group of really extraordinary people. When I did see security or people coming out on stage, and their moment was being disrupted in some way, I got really worried.”

“And then when they say, ‘Moonlight wins,’ it just threw me a bit,” Alie continued. “It threw me more than a bit. I just didn’t want to go up there and take something from somebody.

“It’s very hard to feel joy in a moment like that, but I feel very fortunate for all of us to have walked away with the best picture award. It’s pretty remarkable.”

Jordan Horowitz

It was Horowitz, a La La Land producer, who first announced the flub to the audience. He later described the moment to E!, saying,  “There was a guy, a stagehand guy, who started kind of buzzing around, looking for the envelope” while the musical’s cast and crew where celebrating onstage.

When the envelope was found,  the stagehand “opened it, and it said ‘Emma Stone, La La Land’ on it,” Horowitz said. “At that moment, it was clear there was a problem. They eventually found the best picture envelope.”

Rodd & Gunn to Open Store in Brooklyn

Rodd & Gunn, a New Zealand-based men’s wear brand, will open its second U.S. store in New York City in March.
The 3,200-square-foot store at 81 Front Street in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn joins a flagship that opened in Fashion Island in Newport Beach, Calif., in October.
Rodd & Gunn operates 85 stores in New Zealand and Australia, but entered the American market as a wholesaler.
Asked why the brand chose Brooklyn instead of Manhattan for its East Coast debut, Mike Beagley, chief executive officer, said, “We weren’t really looking at opening on the East Coast, but this opportunity came up and we thought it was a great way of commencing in New York quickly. It is an amazing building in an iconic location that we believe is an emerging retail and lifestyle area of Brooklyn – incredibly high average household income and literally a stone’s throw from Wall Street.”
He said the California store has performed “exceptionally well and we are really happy in how the Newport Beach community has embraced us. We are trading well above plan and selling all of our categories from hand-made in New Zealand luggage to outerwear and footwear.”
Beagley said the plan calls for opening eight to 10

Everything You Need to Know About Charlize Theron’s Incredible Oscar Earrings

Charlize Theron stepped out on the 89th annual Academy Awards red carpet on Sunday wearing a floor-length metallic Dior Haute Couture gown — and quite the statement jewelry. The actress, who is presenting during the ceremony, was dripping in diamond accessories by Chopard. Her look included diamond drop earrings from the brand’s “Garden of Kalahari Collection,” which are set in 18-karat white gold and feature a total of 59.9 carats worth of diamonds. She also wore two diamond rings from Chopard’s “High Jewelry Collection.” She quite literally shined.
Theron won an Academy Award for her lead role in “Monster” in 2004. She was the first South African actress to win an Oscar for Best Actress.

Au Jour Le Jour RTW Fall 2017

“It’s a contemporary princess,” said Diego Marquez during a backstage interview before his show, referring to the young woman he and Mirko Fontana portrayed for fall.
The designer looked to Aesop’s classic fables as sources of inspiration for the cute collection, which marked a nice step in the brand’s process of maturation. Iconic symbols and protagonists of the legendary “The Fox and the Grapes” and “The Wolf and the Lamb” were embroidered on turtleneck sweaters matched with cropped denim pants, as well as on romantic see-through tulle dresses punctuated by shimmering beads.
An enchanted forest inspired a botanical print splashed on an ankle-length fluid frock and on a languid silk pajama set worn with a faux Mongolian fur stole. The designers also played with textures by introducing a leopard jacquard coat, as well as a lacquered jacket with faux-fur details in an energetic orange tone. The well-executed collection was a coherent and focused effort targeting a wider range of costumers than previous lineups.

Clash of the Titans: Karl and Meryl

Milan is proving a season for the ages, without even considering the goods on the runways. How often do you have a story line pitting two honest-to-God living legends, both supreme artists of their genres, against each other? In the throes of the most intense seasons for both, no less? Real news with naked Kardashian-level clickbait promise? Call it the Clash of the Creative-Genius Titans.
It’s a story line in which WWD is involved. And compelling though it is, it’s one about which I feel regret for its negative impact on two people I respect and for whom I have a great deal of admiration, one from afar; the other from the vantage of a 20-year relationship based on trust and honesty. It bothers me that WWD and I are involved in casting a pall over a moment that should be one of pure joy for Meryl Streep. She attended last night’s Oscars in a class by herself, the most nominated actor of all time after her 20th nod, this one for “Florence Foster Jenkins.” And Karl Lagerfeld — the best quote in the business, ever unafraid to speak opinions that, in my experience, have always been grounded in fact.
This is what happened. Backstage at Fendi on Thursday, Lagerfeld

Miss Universe Feels Your Pain, Oscars

Oscars 2017, you are not alone.

Shortly after Academy Award producers interrupted “La La Land” creators’ acceptance speeches to deliver the news that “Moonlight” had really won best picture, host Jimmy Kimmel quipped that he blamed Steve Harvey for the mix-up.

That’s because Harvey accidentally crowned the wrong winner at the 2015 Miss Universe pageant, and did not correct the error for two whole minutes.

So when a mix-up involving the final, most prestigious Oscar of the night stunned the Dolby Theater into silence (and made for a pretty awkward live TV moment), the folks over at the Miss Universe competition could relate.

65 Years Later, Woman Celebrates Anniversary In Her Wedding Dress

Ruthie McCoy wanted a special way to celebrate her 65th wedding anniversary with her husband Tom, so she decided to pull out her wedding dress from 1952.

She wore it to a special gathering in Lubbock, Texas to mark their milestone anniversary, and, according to the Today show, her husband absolutely loved it.

“It took me back to the very first time I saw her,” Tom said. “She was in an all-white dress (then). She looked like a little angel. I found out after I married her that she is an angel.”

Ruthie told the Today show all about the satin dress, which the couple bought for $ 39.99 many years ago.

“It has lace around the waistline, over the hips and down the back, and of course, lots of buttons… I worked so hard to make the money to buy it,” she said.

After six decades together, the dress (and Ruthie!) still looks as gorgeous as ever. Watch the rest of the video above to see what the McCoy’s looked like on their wedding day.

‘Moonlight’ Writer Dedicates Film To All POC And Gender-Nonconforming

The 89th Academy Awards on Sunday weren’t lacking in high-key socio-political statements, one of which came from “Moonlight” playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney.

After receiving the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, which “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins and McCraney shared, they both gave some poignant words about the movie ― which also won Best Picture ― in their acceptance speeches.

The original play ― titled “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue” and written over a decade ago ― was inspired by McCraney’s own life experiences.

His speech perfectly attested to the social significance of the film.

“Black and brown boys and girls and gender non-conforming…who don’t see themselves…we’re trying show you, you and us…this is for you,” McCraney said.

We ‘preciate you McCraney.

Director Ava DuVernay’s Oscars Dress Sends A Powerful Political Message

Ava DuVernay used her platform at the Oscars ― and her gorgeous dress ― to make a powerful statement against Donald Trump at the awards show on Sunday.

The Oscar-nominated director and screenwriter explained via Twitter why her look for the Academy Awards was “a small sign of solidarity.”

“I chose to wear a gown by a designer from a majority Muslim country,” DuVernary tweeted from her account. “Thanks to @AshiStudio of Lebanon.”

Designer Mohammed Ashi, who is from Saudi Arabia, launched Ashi Studio in Beirut, Lebanon in 2007, according to the brand’s website.

DuVernay’s sign of solidarity seemed to reference Trump’s travel ban, a controversial executive order that primarily targeted Muslim-majority countries.

Many people on Twitter thanked the director for taking a stand:

Before heading to the Oscars, DuVernay also made sure to recognize and remember Trayvon Martin five years after his death.

“On my way to aking a moment to remember ,” she wrote. “Our hoodies are still up and the movement is still strong. .”

‘He Lied’: Meryl Streep Slams Karl Lagerfeld After He Claimed She Ditched Chanel at the Oscars

Meryl Streep is defending herself after Chanel’s designer Karl Lagerfeld claimed that she dropped out of wearing a Chanel dress to this year’s Oscars in favor of a brand that would pay her.

“In reference to Mr. Lagerfeld’s ‘statement,’ there is no ‘controversy’: Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist, and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication,” Streep said in a statement to PEOPLE. “That publication printed this defamation, unchecked. Subsequently, the story was picked up globally, and continues, globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars, on the occasion of my record breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues and the audience.

“I do not take this lightly, and Mr. Lagerfeld’s generic ‘statement’ of regret for this ‘controversy’ was not an apology. He lied, they printed the lie, and I am still waiting,” she said.

Earlier this week, Lagerfeld told Women’s Wear Daily that Streep eschewed a Chanel dress for Sunday’s award show in favor of a designer who would allegedly pay her.

“I made a sketch, and we started to make the dress,” Lagerfeld told WWD. He claimed that shortly after production started on the gown, Streep’s camp reportedly canceled in favor of a label that offered a pay out. “‘Don’t continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us,’ ” Lagerfeld claimed the actress’s team told him.

Streep’s rep refuted the claim to the Hollywood Reporter, saying that it went against the Oscar winner’s moral code to accept money for wearing a dress on the red carpet.

Shortly after Streep’s rep’s statement, Chanel issued a statement of their own, backing up the actress’ claim.

“Chanel engaged in conversations with Ms. Streep’s stylist to design a dress for her to wear to the Academy Awards, with the full understanding that she was considering options from other design houses. When informed by the stylist that Ms. Streep had chosen a dress by another designer there was no mention of the reason. Chanel wishes to express our continued and deep respect for Ms. Streep.”

Streep is nominated for her 20th golden statue this year, teeing up against stars like Natalie Portman and Emma Stone in the Best Actress category for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins. At the Golden Globes in January, she was awarded with the highly revered Cecil B. DeMille Award and delivered a passionate and poignant acceptance speech where she took aim at president Donald Trump and called for empathy and action in the current political climate.

The silver screen icon already has three Oscars in her arsenal for her roles in 2011’s The Iron Lady, 1982’s Sophie’s Choice and 1979’s Kramer v. Kramer.

The Academy Awards kicks off live on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 26, with a 7 p.m. ET pre-show and 8:30 p.m. ceremony. See all the Oscar nominees and get your own ballot here!

Kate Beckinsale Shines at Piaget Pre-Oscar Party in Hollywood Hills

Seems like there are a lot of 10-year anniversaries during Oscar Week this year. Essence celebrated a decade of its Black Women in Hollywood event on Thursday, Women in Film toasted the same miletone for its Oscar nominees party on Friday, and Swiss watch and jewelry maker Piaget is also celebrating its 10th year of Oscar weekend initiatives.
Since 2007, Piaget has been presenting sponsor for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the show honoring indie films and actors, which takes place the day before the Oscars on the beach in Santa Monica. This year, the company also threw a lavish cocktail bash in a private home in the Hollywood Hills to showcase some of its high jewelry pieces created for the Oscars red carpet.
Piaget ambassador Jessica Chastain was to be the party’s guest of honor, but at the last minute was unable to make it to town. Luckily, event cohost The Weinstein Company had also invited its talent roster, which included Kate Beckinsale and young “Lion” star Sunny Pawar. Saroo Brierley, the real-life inspiration for the film, as well as actors Sam Heughan, Billy Brown, Paz Vega and director John Singleton.

Aquilano.Rimondi RTW Fall 2017

It felt like Roberto Rimondi and Tommaso Aquilano chiseled their women out of a block of ice that’s been in cold storage since the Eighties. Straight from the boardroom, much of the collection was an ode to stone cold power dressing, with retro references abundant in broad, sharp-shouldered tailored jackets, some long, some cropped, in mannish black, gray, pinstripes and checks. On the bottom were asymmetrical skirts, high-waisted carrot shaped pants and even some biker shorts. The total look telegraphed something very retro-future. All of it was well-made and nicely cut, classic enough that it could thaw into something more current when styled with softer, more casual stuff.
The latter half of the show had rounder, warmer edges with similar silhouettes done in deep colors — magenta, blue and purple. A velvet off-the-shoulder dress worn over a starched button-down shirt will have a completely different attitude on its own. Likewise dresses done in steel and aluminum embroidery. Despite the hardware, the dresses had supple shape and movement.

Streep Fires Back at Lagerfeld, WWD

On the eve of the Oscars at which she has been nominated for a record 20th time, Meryl Streep is angry, at Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel and WWD. On Friday, WWD reported that Lagerfeld said Streep had canceled an order for a couture gown to wear to the ceremony because another house had offered to pay her to wear its dress. Since then, Chanel and Lagerfeld have both backed off that claim, admitting that it was false.
On Saturday, Streep issued a statement to WWD: “In reference to Mr. Lagerfeld’s ‘statement,’ there is no ‘controversy’: Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication. That publication printed this defamation, unchecked. Demi Lovato Says She’s 1 Percent African — And Twitter Absolutely Loses It

So much for wanting to share some personal news.

Pop star Demi Lovato was hit by a firestorm of haters on Twitter after sharing the results of a DNA ancestry test on Friday.

Lovato, 24, revealed that she’s mostly Spanish, with Native American, Scandinavian, Irish and British roots. She also said she’s 1 percent African.

Lovato’s clear excitement was perhaps expected, since she’s been outspoken about her love of Africa. After celebrating her 21st birthday by volunteering with a children’s charity in Kenya, she got a tattoo of the continent on her arm.

“I went to Kenya and it was just a very, very inspirational journey that I feel like really had a huge impact on my life,” she told iHeart radio while discussing her ink. “I would’ve gotten Kenya but then people would have been like, ‘What’s that?’ So Africa’s a little more distinct.”

Her test results were not well received.

The “Confident” singer’s mood went from excited to downcast in a matter of minutes. In a follow-up Tweet, she called out some of her haters for being “mean [as f**k].”

Fortunately, there were plenty of others who embraced her Lovato’s news.

A 2014 study found that roughly 6 million Americans who identified themselves as white were found to have some African ancestry. That equated to roughly 3.5 percent of self-described white Americans having 1 percent or more African ancestry, according to The Washington Post. To reach that 1 percent, the individuals would have to have an African relative no further back than seven generations, the paper reported.

How Loving v. Virginia Blazed The Trail For Sweet Love Stories Like This One

When the historic Loving v. Virginia case legalized interracial marriage in America in 1967, it changed the lives of countless individuals ― many of whom wouldn’t realize it until decades later. Bryan Sells and Deneta Howland were children when the Lovings won their Supreme Court battle to legally marry, but the impact of the case would become deeply personal for the two in 2007.

Bryan and Deneta’s story begins in 1989, when they met in college. For Deneta, the friendship was simply platonic.

“I honestly thought, ‘Well, he’s a nice guy,’ but I wasn’t going to date outside my race,” she told “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2008. “I had these ideas about how I wanted my life to be: I knew I wanted brown babies and I was going to marry a black person.”

At first, Deneta’s life seemed as if could be headed in that direction. She and Bryan went their separate ways after graduation and began successful careers ― he became a civil rights attorney in Montgomery, Ala., and she became a doctor in Memphis, Tenn. But, 10 years later, Deneta had the urge to visit Montgomery to go on Civil Rights tours. So, she emailed Bryan out of the blue.

Upon reconnecting, Bryan planned out a weekend of Civil Rights tours for Deneta’s visit. When the two began exploring those historical sites, Deneta noticed something about her old friend.

“I guess I was surprised throughout our seeing all these different sites just how much they touched him personally,” Deneta says. “I saw a little piece of his heart.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words began echoing in her head as well.

“When I think about Dr. King’s speeches and all the words that he said, the ones that keep coming back to me is his part in ‘I Have a Dream’ speech about being judged not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character,” Deneta says. “I was attracted to Bryan’s character and attracted to who he was as a person, and realized I’d been judging him by the color of his skin for 10 years.”

Seven years after that visit, Bryan and Deneta wed.

“It was the Lovings,” Deneta said, “who blazed the trail.”

Zach Braff, Fans Call On Alec Baldwin To Be Trump At Correspondents Dinner

Here’s an idea: Since Donald Trump has announced he’s ditching the annual White House Correspondents Dinner in April, maybe a substitute could take his place. Who better than Alec Baldwin, whose impersonations of Trump on “Saturday Night Live” are growing ever-more eerily close to the real thing?

Actor Zach Braff came up with the brainstorm. After Trump tweeted that he wouldn’t be attending the dinner, Braff quickly tweeted to Baldwin that it was time to “suit up.” Other Baldwin fans chimed in.

No word yet from Baldwin. Someone who would be extremely unpleased about the substitution would be Trump, who absolutely loathes Baldwin’s impersonations of him and just doesn’t think they’re … well … funny.

Trump has become the first president in over three decades to duck out of the event which features a comedian roast of the chief executive.

It’s not a huge surprise Trump is dodging the event, given his repeated attacks on the media that reached a kind of defcon-5 calling the press the “enemy of the people.” After his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, several media outlets, including the Huffington Post, were barred from a press briefing.

The president’s attacks had the media rethinking the whole dinner affair. The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Bloomberg had canceled their famous event parties, and CNN was considering skipping the sit-down. Comedian Samantha Bee announced early this year that she was planning an alternative event on the same night with the tentative title: “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.”

The event by the White House Correspondents Association, which hosts D.C. journalists, celebrities and Beltway newsmakers, first began in 1921. The last president to skip out was Ronald Reagan in 1981 because he was still rattled by an assassination attempt — but he managed to phone in his comments.

Trump has attended the dinner before — and was ribbed from the podium by former president Obama in 2011 for peddling the “birther” tall-tale that Obama had not been born in America.

Who knows? If Baldwin decides to pick up the gauntlet perhaps there would also be an open invitation for “SNL” pal Beck Bennett to stand in for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Transgender Model To Caitlyn Jenner: ‘We Do Not Need You To Save Us’

Transgender model Isis King tweeted a blunt open letter to Caitlyn Jenner on Friday after the reality star criticized the Trump administration’s decision to rescind Obama-era guidance that protected transgender students in public schools.

King, the first openly transgender contestant to compete on “America’s Next Top Model,” calls out Jenner in the letter, referencing an incident at the TransNation Queen USA Pageant in October in which Jenner allegedly ignored King’s presence, then cut in front of her to take an empty elevator for herself and her team.

“I could not believe that this happened to me and immediately felt as if I had just been asked to move to the back of the bus,” King writes in the letter. “It was as if I was not good enough, not worthy enough, not rich enough, not famous enough to ride with these three white women. … The amount of privilege that was thrown in my face made me feel so uncomfortable.”

King seemed to suggest that the insult represents a larger issue in the trans community when it comes to power, privilege and visibility: “I have, like so many women of color, helped blazed [sic] trails for our sisters, brothers and siblings, and I have seen how you treated me. We do not need you to save us.”

On Thursday, Jenner tweeted a video message directed at President Donald Trump “from one Republican to another,” calling Trump’s blow to the rights of trans students a “disaster” and telling the president “we’ll see you in court.”

The video was met with harsh criticism from parts of the LGBTQ community. Jenner was an outspoken supporter of Trump during the 2016 election ― even attending his inauguration.

UPDATE: 1:25 p.m. ― King said in an interview with TooFab.com that Jenner called following the tweet of the open letter, and the pair have now “resolved everything.”

Meek Mill Makes Homeless Man Do Push-Ups For $20 In Infuriating Video

Meek Mill disappointed a lot of fans on Friday night after the Philadelphia rapper posted a series of videos to his Instagram stories showing a homeless man asking for some change.

The video never actually shows Meek Mill, who reportedly has an estimated net worth of $ 3 million, handing the man money.

However, it does show the 29-year-old rapper telling the man to do push ups for $ 20.

“We ain’t going to give out no free money,” Meek Mill can be heard saying in the video, which was still on the rapper’s Instagram account early Saturday evening.

In disbelief, the man tells Meek Mill and his friends, “you’re not going to give me $ 20,” to which the rapper responds, “yes I am.”

The next video shows the man on the floor doing 20 push-ups as Meek Mill counts.

Instagram stories are only available for 24 hours, but celebrity gossip site The Shade Room uploaded the rapper’s full video to their own Instagram account.

#PressPlay: #MeekMill makes a homeless man do some push-ups for money. #Roommates, what are your thoughts?

A post shared by The Shade Room (@theshaderoom) on

Meek Mill flaunts his wealth on Instagram, sharing photos of his jewelry, his watches and his cars. All that makes his request for the homeless man seem all the more degrading.

Not only does he appear to be making fun of the man, he seems to exploit him by sharing with his more than 11 million followers a video of the man following his orders for money.

Fans of the rapper were understandably let down.

Meek Mill, there are more humane ways to be charitable. Do better next time.

Diane Kruger and Norman Reedus in High Spirits After Returning to New York City From Out of Town Trip

Diane Kruger and Norman Reedus are spending quality time together.

The actors were spotted moving things out of Reedus’s sports car after returning to New York City from a trip out of town for a couple days. They were in high spirits and seemed to be having a great time together as Kruger smiled at Reedus while she grabbed bags out of the silver car.

The actress, 40, kept her outfit simple with a black jacket and a long cream skirt while keeping her should-length hair slightly tousled. Reedus, 48, rocked all all black outfit complete with a light North Face jacket in the warmer New York temperature.

The close duo was last seen together when the German actress supported the Walking Dead actor at his photography exhibition opening in Paris in December. The exhibition showcased photographs from Reedus’ book, The Sun’s Coming Up… Like a Big Bald Head at Galerie Hors-Champs.

Kruger and Reedus previously costarred in the 2015 drama Sky. In the film, Kruger embarks on a journey of self-discovery after hooking up with a cowboy (Reedus) and leaving her husband.

Kruger previously dated Joshua Jackson for ten years before breaking up in Summer 2016. Reedus and Kruger had been spotted getting close at a dinner before the breakup, sparking rumors that Kruger and Jackson were on the outs.

Reedus was in a five-year relationship with model Helena Christensen. They had a son in 1999 before their split in 2003.

The Barbera Playbook

When Tengram Capital Partners purchased the majority stake in Luciano Barbera in October 2014, the private equity firm saw the brand as a dia-mond in the rough.
Although the label was well respected and had been around since the mid-Sixties, it had a small presence — particularly in the U.S. Its biggest customers were European specialty stores seeking luxury sportswear with a focus on knits.
But over the past 2 1/2 years, Tengram has built teams in New York and Milan to completely revamp the brand, touching everything from the product design and the marketing while expanding its wholesale and own-retail presence.
“We’ve created a playbook for the company,” said Todd Barrato, who joined Barbera as global chief executive officer when Tengram bought its controlling stake. Barrato was formerly the ceo of North American operations for Brioni. He’s also the son of former Brioni chief Joe Barrato.
“The brand was stagnant,” Barrato said. “It had a great name that was never jeopardized, but the family was not capable of taking it to the next level.”
Luciano Barbera, the man, was considered to be among the most elegant gentlemen in the world. His family owned the Carlo Barbera fabric mill in Biella, Italy. According to company

‘The Invisible Man’ Performance Artist and Photographer Liu Bolin About to Take a More Public View

ALL CLEAR: The Chinese performance artist and photographer Liu Bolin is the art world’s version of “The Invisible Man,” but he won’t be so hard to see in the months ahead.
Annie Leibovitz’s semitransparent shots of him in Moncler’s spring ads are just the start of a hectic work schedule. In April, Bolin will have solo exhibitions at the Gallery Magda Danysz in Shanghai, and at the Galerie Paris-Beijing in Paris. There will also be a performance at Centre Georges Pompidou and another at Festival Portrait(s) in Vichy, France later this year.
Before those get under way, the artist will speak May 11 at the “Art of Tomorrow” conference at the W Doha Hotel & Residences in Qatar. The upcoming blitz is a switch for the artist whose “Hiding in the City” series features self portraits in which he camouflages himself by painting himself to blend into his landscapes. “It’s my way to convey all the anxiety I feel for human beings,” the artist has said of the practice.
Along with brands like Guerlain, Fred, Renault and Ford, Bolin said his first fashion-related project was to hide five well-known designers — Jean Paul Gaultier, Alber Elbaz, Angela Missoni and Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier

Etro RTW Fall 2017

The giant, vibrant kaleidoscope in the entry flagged the designer’s intent. So did an explosion of actual flags — 3,000 of them, bohemian bright, strung over the show space. For fall, Veronica Etro would embrace the house heritage with euphoric command.
During her tenure as women’s creative director, Etro has taken proud ownership of that legacy. Still, its specificity can prove challenging. Along the way, she has varied her degree of gusto, at times going for full-on embrace and at others, manipulating and distorting the patterns to downplay and disguise their paisley-ness.
No such subterfuge here. For fall, Etro imagined an adventurous sisterhood — the “Etro Paisley Tribe” — as intrepid as they are chic. All passionate travelers, here they gathered for some kind of spiritual-cum-fashion convocation. “It’s like an altitude festival,” Etro said during a preview, “in the mountains, in Bhutan, the Himalayas. And there’s a lot going on.”
Indeed so, but delightfully abundant. And if everything going on — the paisleys shared billing with flowers, regimental stripes, harlequin diamonds, dragon patches, mandala insignias, animal spots and on and on — would prove more than dizzying when descended from the mountain and into more secular stylistic settings, many of the clothes were

Chinese Photographer Ren Hang, Who Suffered From Depression, Dead at 29

HONG KONG –  One of China’s most talented young photographers, Ren Hang, has passed away.
WWD has reached out directly to Ren Hang’s studio. The news was confirmed by several who worked with him.
According to Taschen, who published the Beijing artist’s work, the 29-year-old took his own life on Thursday.
The book publisher also posted on Instagram: “Taschen is devastated by the death of Chinese photographer Ren Hang (1987-2017), a self-taught master of surrealistic, startling, and beautiful pictures, censored in his homeland, feted across the globe, and at the pioneering forefront of a gender inclusive world.”
Eli Klein of the Klein Sun Gallery also paid tribute saying: “Today we mourn the loss of Ren Hang, a talented and rising young photographer who passed away well before his time. @kleinsungallery was honored to host his solo exhibition last year and sends our heartfelt condolences to all of his loved ones.”
The controversial young artist, who had been arrested multiple times in his homeland and had his often sexually provocative work censored, appeared to struggle with depression. In a foreboding Weibo post on Jan. 27, he wrote: “Every year my wish is always the same: Die earlier.” He quickly followed it up with another post saying: “Hopefully this year

The Story Behind That Photo Of Leo Texting After His Oscar Win

It took Leonardo DiCaprio five nominations to win an Oscar and one photo to prove he was chill about it.

You remember the one: Leo, seated away from the crowd at the Vanity Fair party, head bent over a phone while his Oscar sits on the floor between his legs. Just a casual night out in an Armani tux.

Evidence of an A-lister acting normal after scoring Hollywood’s biggest prize is made for online vitality, and the Leo photo didn’t disappoint. Even Oscar winners need to text their buddies, right?

Jeff Vespa, a veteran celebrity photographer who used to work for Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, was the lucky person to snap the picture. Vepsa has captured Hollywood events since shooting the “Bulworth” premiere in 1998. On that fateful Oscar night last year, he spotted DiCaprio in a corner, an entourage flanking him. Vespa asked to grab the Best Actor winner for a few posed shots, to which his publicist responded, “No problem, just give him a minute.”

Vespa noticed DiCaprio set his Oscar on the floor, which struck him as interesting. Who would let go of their coveted little gold man? “That alone is crazy,” he said. “You just don’t see that.” And then, like the parting of the Red Sea, the crowd surrounding DiCaprio dispersed, leaving the actor typing on his phone. There was Vespa’s moment. He seized it. “Literally after, I saw the people move back in front of him, obscuring the view,” Vespa said.

So goes the clamor of post-Oscar photographs. Vepsa is a key figure in that scene, having co-founded WireImage, the entertainment platform that Getty Images acquired in 2007. Vespa has shot the Governors Ball and the Vanity Fair party ― two illustrious Oscar galas ― for more than a decade. Having befriended many celebrities and their publicists throughout his tenure, which includes serving as official photographer of the Sundance and Toronto film festivals, Vespa has captured defining backstage moments now lodged in the Oscars’ glitzy history.

“My life is lived in a matter of seconds,” Vespa said. Miss an unlikely interaction or the shimmer of a winner’s golden statues, and that’s that.

For the time time in years, Vespa will sit out Sunday’s Oscars. He directed his first film last year, the historical drama “Amre,” so Vespa is stepping away from certain photographic duties to embrace the other side of Hollywood. Soon, the photographer could become the photographed.

In the meantime, The Huffington Post has a gallery of Vespa’s celebrity images over the years. You can see more on his Instagram.

CPAC Crowd Duped Into Waving Russian Flags During Trump Speech

A pair of progressive moles with a sense of humor were apparently responsible for a grand — although short-lived — prank at the Conservative Political Action Conference that had members proudly waving tiny banners emblazoned with the name “Trump” that were actually Russian flags.

The pranksters passed 1,000 red-white-and-blue Russian flags before Donald Trump’s speech at the conservative confab in Maryland on Friday. Audience members scooped them up and waved them enthusiastically as Trump railed against the media. He also tweeted a series of attacks earlier against the FBI, accusing it of leaking information that the White House had pressured the bureau to publicly dispute reports of contact between Trump’s aides and Russia.

The flag tricksters identified themselves as Jason Charter and Ryan Clayton with the self-described “resistance” group Americans Take Action. They purchased tickets to the conference shortly before Trump was to take the podium and handed out the flags, Charter told The Huffington Post.

Charter, 22, said that the gag was intended to mock Trump’s admiration of Russian President Vladimir Putin and highlight concerns about Trump administration ties to Russia. “Donald Trump is selling out the U.S.,” he said.

The prank went surprisingly smoothly, he added. “I asked people if they wanted a Trump flag and they took it,” Charter said. “There were only about five people who said, ‘Wait a minute, this is the Russian flag.’”

Politico’s Tim Alberta tweeted that the crowd “gave no thought” to the Russian flag. They just saw “red, white & blue” with Trump printed on it.

Charter said that pranks can be “fun and still effective in shedding light on a serious situation.” He said Americans Take Action has several other events planned. “I, of course, can’t go into details, but we’re not stopping until Donald Trump is impeached.”

Clayton, 36, using a mock Russian accent in an interview with Atlantic, called the prank a “true-flag” operation. “It show how Trump and Russia are so connected, they like peas in pod,” he said.

CPAC organizers finally got a clue and quickly collected the flags, and warned that anyone who continued to wave or hold one would be ejected, The Hill reported. But some wanted to save the flags as souvenirs.

Clayton was quickly kicked out, but Charter managed to dodge organizers for a time, according to the men. Charter says he was finally booted when he called Trump a “fascist” and “Putin’s puppet.”

Trump has come under fire since the campaign for his strangely laudatory statements about Putin and for appearing to call on the Russian government to hack into campaign rival Hillary Clinton’s emails. Michael Flynn stepped down as Trump’s national security adviser earlier this month after it was revealed that he discussed easing sanctions against the country with Russia’s ambassador before Trump was sworn in as president. Trump has also expressed skepticism about intelligence officials’ findings that Russia was responsible for hacking Democrats’ emails and spreading fake news harmful to Clinton in a bid to sway the election toward Trump.

19 Reasons Your Obsession With Dev Patel Is Justified

We need to talk about Dev Patel

The 26-year-old British Indian actor could walk away with the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Lion.” In the film, Dev plays Saroo Brierley, a man desperately searching for his family in India after being separated from them at the age of 5.

It’s a great, fiery performance that deserves recognition in and of itself, but there’s another reason we’re rooting for him. Just read this tweet:

That is a huge deal. On-screen representation matters, and it’s especially important for Asian actors. According to a 2016 diversity study, Asian actors nabbed only 3.9 percent of speaking roles in film ― a stark contrast from the 73.7 percent white actors receive.

That’s not the only reason we’re pulling for Dev to win an Oscar, though. Below, a few reasons why we’re obsessed with the Oscar-nominated actor:

— Before receiving all this Oscar buzz for “Lion,” Dev was in 2008’s massive hit “Slumdog Millionaire” and was equally amazing in that. Remember when he danced like this and low-key stole your heart?

— He was also great on HBO’s “The Newsroom,” playing a blogger and the office’s resident computer geek.

— He was super cute back then, of course.

— But right around the time of “The Newsroom,” something began to change. Our nerdy-cute pretend boyfriend started to grow into his looks in a major way. It’s like one day the hair gods smiled down at Dev and said, “Hey, ‘Slumdog’ guy, it’s time to grow out that hair and drive everyone crazy with lust for your locks.”

And grow it out he did. The swooshy-hair era began and nothing has been the same since. Dev has pretty much blossomed into full babe mode now.

Woah, right?

— Those curls.

Seriously, THOSE CURLS.

— And dat smile.

— He also has a beautiful, classical profile. And the beard is good, too. (Let’s give credit where credit is due, guys.)

— He’s so good at posing for photo shoots, his side hustle should be modeling. (But please don’t stop acting, Dev.)

— Then there’s his accent. Dev pulls off a pretty convincing Aussie accent in “Lion,” but his real-life British lilt will melt your heart.

Sigh. Please never stop touching your hair.

— All awards season long, Dev has been a big booster of Sunny Pawar, the adorable 8-year-old who plays the younger version of his character in “Lion.”

Like, he literally boosts him up:

Sunny very impressively carries the first half of “Lion” all by himself and Dev gives him credit for that every chance he gets.

“He’s so incredible in this film, and I share this nomination with him in a big way,” Dev told the Los Angeles Times recently.

Don’t pretend you weren’t deeply affected by the cuteness of their introduction of “Lion” at the Golden Globes.

Same, girl, same.

— Who’s he taking to the Oscars? Apparently, his mom, Anita. “That’s her moment,” he told the LA Times. “I’m her guest.”

D’aww. Here they are at a 2009 British awards party.

Gotta love a man who respects his mama.

— We also want him to win because we’re positive he’d be so humble and bashful during his acceptance speech. Just look at how he reacted to his name being called for his SAG award nomination.

— And in spite of all the Oscar buzz surrounding him, Dev realizes we’re living in politically tumultuous times and there’s weightier things happening in the world right now. Here’s what he told the LA Times on the SAG Awards red carpet:

“At times like this, you’re constantly questioning what you’re doing at awards like this or promoting a movie. It feels so pointless. I look to the people around me and they remind me the message of this film, of the art we’re trying to inject into the world right now. It’s about unification,” he added. “When I think about that, it makes me have a little bit more strength.”

— Oh, and another thing: He’s an animal lover. (Dev + doggo = happy us. And loud squee-ing noises, to be honest.)

— On another shallow note, boy fills out a suit quite well.

— And in case you were wondering, he has a mean street-style game, too.

— We’re in good company in our Dev devotion. Ellen DeGeneres gave him the title of “Sexiest Man Alive” when he visited the show back in January. So well deserved, even if Dev was like, “Aw, shucks, me?”

And his “Lion” co-star Nicole Kidman recognizes his swag as well.

Watch out, Keith Urban.

— Heck, even his ex-girlfriend and “Slumdog Millionaire” co-star Freida Pinto gave him props on Instagram for his Best Supporting Actor Oscar nom.

So clearly, he’s best supporting ex-boyfriend, too.

Now would be a good time to mention what a ridiculously good-looking couple they were a few years back.

So pretty.

— Lastly, Dev’s work on “Lion” didn’t end when he was done filming. He’s been busy promoting #LionHeart, a social impact campaign which will provide financial support to the over 11 million children who live on the streets of India. Here’s our boy asking people to contribute:

In conclusion, Dev Patel is a super talented actor and a stand-up guy with amazing hair.

Cheers to you, Dev. We’re pulling for you and your epic curls Sunday night!

There’s A Massive Photo Of Kourtney Kardashian As Jesus On The Cross In Khloe’s House

It appears Kourtney Kardashian is taking notes from Yeezus

On Friday, the mother-of-three shared a clip on her Snapchat, walking viewers through her sister Khloe’s home. At one point, she goes up the stairs to reveal what appears to be a large framed photo of herself in the image of Jesus crucified on the cross, just casually hanging on the wall.

The Kardashians have not hidden their Christian beliefs ― they were the topic of an interview with Oprah in 2012 ― but we’re going to go ahead and say this probably doesn’t represent living in the image of God.

These ‘La La Land’ Songwriters Are Also Behind Your Latest Broadway Obsession

Before a shower of Academy Awards rain down upon all those associated with  “La La Land” on Sunday, let’s take a moment to remember that two of the film’s nominees are also responsible for the biggest musical theater hit of the year.

Years before Mia and Sebastian danced among the stars, composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul were already being hailed as the heirs to Rodgers and Hammerstein. With the debut of their celebrated new musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” currently playing at the Music Box Theatre in New York City, Pasek and Paul are poised to become the premier songwriting team working today.

The two first met during their freshman year at the University of Michigan where they were both studying musical theater. Bonding over the shared embarrassment of being the two worst dancers in a ballet class, Pasek and Paul soon turned their attention to writing songs. After a transformative apprenticeship with “Avenue Q” co-creator Robert Lopez, the duo began developing an impressive resume filled with musical adaptations of movies like “Dogfight” and “A Christmas Story.”

But it was “Dear Evan Hansen” that catapulted Pasek and Paul into the upper echelon of the musical theater community. Starring Ben Platt of “Pitch Perfect” as the anxious teenage depressive boy next door, “Dear Evan Hansen” has all the trappings of a hit modern musical. After a classmate he barely knew commits suicide, high schooler Evan (Platt) inserts himself into the lives of the deceased’s family, as he struggles with his own demons and self-confidence. The irresistibly catchy ballads pair well with the story of a teenager grappling with his place in the world, as big themes of love and loss are boiled down to a fiercely relatable level.

As the “Dear Evan Hansen” team was preparing for the show’s Broadway debut, the two already had their eye on another project: Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” In a pitch to the director, Pasek and Paul wrote the proposed lyrics for the song “City of Stars,” which garnered the duo a Golden Globe award earlier this year and is nominated for an Academy Award. Chazelle was immediately impressed, describing the duo as a “goldmine,” and the rest is award show history.

Although “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen” have little in common thematically ― one is consumed by nostalgia, while the other is decidedly forward-thinking ― in Pasek and Paul’s eyes, the two productions do share a connection.

Speaking with The New York Times in November, Pasek said, “I think we’re attracted to material that’s hopeful and messy, and in that mess, there’s an attempt at getting at truth.”

Get to know Pasek and Paul a little better in the interview below.

How Dirt 4 Is Rewriting the Rally Rulebook

There’s a real sense of history at Codemasters’ Southam studio – a sprawling campus that’s commandeered a slab of soggy English countryside a short cab ride out of Leamington Spa, about an hour or so north-west of London. The FCC just gave you a reason to hold off on buying a 4K TV

The FCC just gave you a reason to hold off on buying a 4K TVOver-the-air 4K broadcasts are coming, but you might want to hold off at getting a new UHD set just yet. The Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to open discussions on the deployment of a next-generation broadcast-TV standard that should offer picture quality up to 4K Ultra High Definition and better antenna reception than today’s over-the-air digital signals. Like 2009’s transition to digital TV signals, this upgrade’s primary sales pitch is about a better picture — not just high definition, but the Ultra High Definition (UHD) 4K resolution that today remains largely confined to streaming-video services and Blu-ray discs.
